Watch Them Grow: The Development Of Teeth

July 29, 2015 4:49 am
Did you know that your teeth begin growth before you are even born? The early years of our teeth are accompanied with several changes to give us a smile that helps us chew food and speak for a lifetime. Come learn about the development of teeth below.
  • 3rd Fetal Week: A baby’s mouth forms. The tongue, jaw, and palate will also develop in the following weeks.
  • 6th Fetal Week: The tooth buds of the primary teeth (baby teeth) begin to form. By the 8th fetal week, all primary tooth buds should be present. Mothers need to remember to get plenty of protein, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin A, C, and D in their diet to help these teeth develop.
  • 6-12 Months: The baby teeth will have finished most of their growth and start poking through the gum line. Teething should be completed by the time a child is 2-3 years old.
  • 6-12 Years: The permanent teeth have been developing for several years and now begin pushing against the baby teeth. The baby teeth fall out and the primary teeth erupt
  • 17-25 Years: The final teeth in the mouth, the wisdom teeth, develop and erupt in these years. But since there is usually no room for these teeth, they become impacted or only erupt partially. The wisdom teeth often require surgical removal to prevent the development of dental health problems.
